Gears of War: E-Day Beginner Guide for Campaign, Co-Op, and Cover Combat
Start with the campaign basics: cover-based combat, modernized movement, solo or co-op play, Bravo Squad, Horde Siege, and Versus. Gears of War: E-Day keeps classic Gears combat while rebuilding movement, enemies, visuals, and multiplayer systems for the new entry.
Start with the campaign to learn the combat flow
The Gears of War: E-Day campaign follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during Emergence Day. It can be played solo, in two-player split-screen co-op on console, or with up to four players online.
Use cover as your default survival tool
Gears of War: E-Day brings back iconic cover-based combat. Move from cover to cover, avoid open lanes, and use the environment before pushing into close-range fights.
Learn the modernized movement system early
Movement and traversal are modernized to add more freedom and verticality. Practice repositioning, climbing routes, and safer angles instead of standing still behind one wall.
Understand Bravo Squad before playing co-op
The campaign is told through Bravo Squad. Marcus, Dom, Mags Carter, and Lucas Reyes are playable from the start in online co-op, giving the squad structure without forcing players away from the main story.
Treat first-contact Locust encounters as close-range threats
Gears of War: E-Day is built around the horror and confusion of the Locust Horde first erupting from below. Reimagined enemies, Wretches, and new creatures are designed to make early encounters feel dangerous.
Use co-op based on your platform
Console players can use two-player split-screen, while online campaign co-op supports up to four players. Online co-op and multiplayer features may require a subscription that includes online multiplayer.
Try Horde Siege after learning campaign fundamentals
Horde Siege is the evolved PvE wave-survival mode in Gears of War: E-Day. It is a good next stop after learning weapons, movement, cover habits, and team positioning.
Move into Versus when you are ready for PvP
Versus includes competitive PvP across new maps and refined fan-favorite 4v4 modes. The Xbox Store lists online multiplayer support for 2 to 12 players and cross-platform multiplayer.
Use returning and new weapons for close-quarters fights
Fan-favorite weapons return and are reimagined, while new weapons are built for brutal close-quarters combat. Beginners should test weapon range and reload timing before rushing enemies.
Set expectations for performance and display features
Gears of War: E-Day is rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 and is designed for modern performance, with 4K resolution and up to 60 FPS across Campaign and Multiplayer on compatible displays.
Quick Tips
- Stay in cover and reposition constantly instead of holding one wall.
- Learn slide, jump, and vertical flank routes before pushing aggressive fights.
- Test weapon range and reload timing in the campaign before entering Versus.
- Coordinate squad roles in Horde Siege so Assault, Marksman, Medic, and Breacher each cover a job.
Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Story and Timeline
Gears of War: E-Day is set fourteen years before the original Gears of War and follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the first Locust emergence on Sera. The campaign plays out in the city of Kalona across three days.
After the Pendulum Wars
Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago return from the Pendulum Wars as young veterans. Both are carrying the loss of Carlos Santiago, Dom's older brother and Marcus's best friend, which gives their relationship a distant and wounded starting point.
Sets the emotional foundation before the Locust invasion begins.
The Ground Opens in Kalona
Marcus and Dom are in Kalona for an armistice memorial when the ground opens and the Locust emerge from below. The first encounters are built around confusion, fear, and first contact with creatures the people of Sera do not yet have names for.
Introduces the horror of the Locust as an unknown force attacking a city in real time.
Four Gears Run Toward the Fight
Bravo Squad forms when Marcus, Dom, Mags Carter, and Lucas Reyes face the first outbreak together. Mags is a former Gear working at Kalona's Imulsion Refinery, while Lucas is a young cadet and communications officer who never saw the front lines.
Builds the playable squad around shared instinct, loyalty, and survival under pressure.
Regrouping and Military Response
The campaign moves from shock into regrouping as Bravo Squad connects with military forces and begins taking on missions across Kalona. The city includes districts such as a sports stadium, industrial waterfront, airfield, refinery zones, and dense residential areas.
Turns the invasion from isolated panic into a coordinated battle for the city.
Kalona Falls Into Desperation
By the third day, the invasion is clearly not an isolated attack. The Locust threat escalates from Feral Wretches into Drones and organized enemy forces, while Bravo Squad sees that Emergence Day is a world-changing catastrophe.
Shows the shift from monster invasion to full-scale war.
Solo, Split-Screen, and Online Co-Op
The Gears of War: E-Day campaign can be played solo, in two-player split-screen on console, or in up to four-player online co-op. The four Bravo Squad characters are playable from the start.
Lets players experience the origin story alone or as a squad.

Gears of War: E-Day Weapons and Combat Mechanics
Gears of War: E-Day keeps Gears' cover-based combat while rebuilding weapons, traversal, enemy encounters, and destruction for larger city fights. Returning weapons sit beside new close-quarters tools, while sliding, jumping, vertical flanks, E-Holes, sinkholes, and micro-destruction change how fights unfold across Kalona.
Gnasher
Close-range shotgun
The Gnasher remains the close-range king and anchors classic Gears of War: E-Day close-quarters fights.
Best use: Push tight spaces, punish enemies at short range, and control aggressive cover-to-cover engagements.
Longshot
Precision rifle
The Longshot rewards patience and precision at distance, especially when players use balconies, rooftops, and elevated routes for flanking.
Best use: Hold sightlines, pick enemies from range, and support squadmates from vertical positions.
Gut Puncher
Armor-piercing explosive launcher
The Gut Puncher is a grenade launcher that fires armor-piercing explosive rounds with player-controlled detonation.
Best use: Quick-fire for immediate blasts or hold the trigger to place explosions behind enemy cover.
Incinerator
Imulsion-fueled shotgun
The Incinerator is a new shotgun powered by Imulsion, built for brutal close-range damage in Gears of War: E-Day.
Best use: Use in close-quarters fights where fast enemy pressure makes space control more important than precision.
Chainsaw Lancer Origin
Battlefield-built signature weapon
The Chainsaw Lancer is born on the battlefield during E-Day, kit-bashed from a prototype on the front lines of the invasion.
Best use: Represents the origin of one of the series' defining weapons during the first Locust War crisis.
Cover Transitions
Movement and positioning
Cover transitions are smoother and support a wider range of cover heights and shapes, including low-ground cover for more organic combat spaces.
Best use: Move through firefights more fluidly while staying inside the classic Gears cover-combat rhythm.
Slide
Fast repositioning
Players can slide from sprint, including under objects, around corners, and directly into cover.
Best use: Escape danger, close distance, or reach cover during fast, chaotic fights.
Jump and Vertical Flanks
Vertical combat
For the first time in Gears, players can jump, opening routes across rooftops, crumbling buildings, balconies, and elevated flanking paths.
Best use: Attack from above, split enemy attention, and combine squad approaches across different routes.
E-Holes
Locust emergence points
E-Holes return in Gears of War: E-Day as both spectacle and tactical threat. Locust can emerge from the ground, and a well-placed grenade can close the hole.
Best use: React quickly to enemy spawns, use explosives to stop pressure, and prevent fights from escalating.
Sinkholes
Large-scale collapse
At larger scales, sinkholes can pull down vehicles and entire buildings as the Locust assault reshapes Kalona.
Best use: Adds battlefield spectacle and environmental danger during major city encounters.
Micro-Destruction
Cover damage
Micro-destruction chips away at cover across different materials, making defensive positions less permanent.
Best use: Pressure enemies hiding behind cover and adapt when your own cover starts breaking down.
